Starting the Year Right: A Beginner's Guide to a Fresh Light Start

Updated: Jun 25

The beginning of the New Year welcomes a new opportunity for a fresh start. All the commotion created by days off, parties, and time spent with families and friends can run you down and make you feel overwhelmed without a good perspective of where to start. I’m suggesting starting this 2024 with an objective system to help you implement new routines where you can take care of yourself, your house, your family or friends, your hobbies, and most importantly your inner self.

As an inspiration, the National Association of Productivity and Organizing Professionals (NAPO) promotes Get Organized & Be Productive (GO Month). It is a month-long event where NAPO members improve the lives of their clients by helping them create environments that support productivity, general health, and well-being. I love this campaign because it is a great inspiration to get organized, be productive, and regain control over our surroundings, time, and possessions. I would like to pass on this motivation to you guys and wish you a fresh light start in 2024!

To keep the momentum going, our first step to start the year right will be to take down all the Christmas decorations that adorned our homes with a more manageable and organized approach. If you had trouble taking your Christmas decorations out, let’s make sure the place where things are going back truly works for you. With this in mind, find a place that is accessible and within reach. I suggest trying to get a Christmas tree bag for storing your tree, the options are immense. I got mine from Amazon a couple of years ago and it is still in perfect condition. Make sure to look for bags that are close to your tree size, with handles, and waterproof. I store my Christmas tree in a narrow closet under the staircase, so the flexible tree bag I have is great since it doesn't take up the entire closet space.

For me, clear cube containers are the solution to store your ornaments and decorations. Their stackable design allows for the use of vertical space while preventing breakage and easy accessibility for the following year. I have found that the 30-liter size is magnificent. Target carries a 30-liter size this year which has been a great addition to my storage system for all my holiday decor. The cube style is lightweight and makes it so easy to carry up and down stairs.

The process of storing your decorations should be simple. Separate all decorations you didn't use this year from the ones you did. As you're storing away the decorations you used, limit yourself to the storage bins you already have. Once you're done storing your decorations from this year, decide if you'd like to keep the decorations you didn't use. You may or may not have enough space in your storage to keep all of them, so you'll have to use your decluttering skills to make decisions. See it as if you were moving out of your home, would you rather take those extra decorations you didn't use and take up more space in the moving van, or would you rather donate them to someone who might make better use of them? I assure you that this process will be easy to fulfill because when you are dealing with a small space you will truly keep items that are important to you while making them fit in the storage space you have. I hope these tips help you embrace the joy of organization and find inspiration to fulfill all your organizational goals following this holiday season.
