It's Not Just a Move... It's Learning How to Feel at Home Again During Life Transitions

A few years ago, I helped a client relocate from Chile to Thailand.
Together, we worked to create a sense of home in a completely new country. I helped her adapt her belongings from three different moves to different spaces, with awkward flows, cultural norms, and the everyday realities that come with starting over in an unfamiliar place.
Recently, she called to tell me it was official. The movers are arriving, and her family is preparing for another international relocation; this time to Brazil. What surprised me the most about this call was the weight of it in her voice. Even from a distance, I could sense the overwhelm, the exhaustion, the uncertainty, but most importantly, the sadness of knowing it was time to leave behind a chapter that had finally become familiar.
Just as she was beginning to feel settled- learning the culture, finding favorite places, creating routines for her family, and building a sense of belonging- life shifted again.
We Think Moving Is About Logistics
Working with my clients during a major life transition is not only about the logistics of how we will address the belongings; it goes deeper than that, because moving is rarely just about the move. The boxes, movers, paperwork, timelines, and checklists tend to be the easiest part of the move.
The harder part comes from what cannot be packed into a box. It's leaving the walking route you take when you need to clear your mind. It's watching your children say goodbye to friends. It's learning a new grocery store, a new coffee shop, a new commute, a new language, or a new way of doing everyday life.
Moving requires us to let go of familiarity and step into uncertainty. That transition can be exciting, but it can also be exhausting.
What We Really Leave Behind on Every Life Transition
Behind every move or life transition, there is a story.
A collection of routines, memories, friendships, favorite foods, traditions, and ordinary moments that quietly became part of our lives. Most of us don't realize how attached we are to these things until they're gone.
The truth is that home is about much more than a physical address. Home is where we develop rhythms. It's where we know where things belong. It's where our environment supports us without us having to think about it. It's where we recover from the demands of the day. When those familiar anchors disappear, even temporarily, we feel a sense of not being quite here, but also not being anywhere else.
Why Home Matters More Than We Realize
One of the core beliefs behind my work is that our homes should support us. Home should not be another source of stress. It should be the place that restores us. The place where we can let our guard down, recharge, and prepare for whatever comes next.
This is especially important during seasons of change. Whether someone is relocating, downsizing, navigating a divorce, becoming an empty nester, welcoming a new family member, or adjusting to a major life shift, the environment around them plays a powerful role in how they experience that transition.
When our surroundings support us, we have greater capacity to navigate uncertainty, but when they don't, even small challenges can feel overwhelming.
Organizing Is Really About Stability
This is why I believe organizing through a life transition is about much more than decluttering belongings.
It's about creating stability.
It's about reducing decision fatigue when there are already too many decisions to make.
It's about establishing routines that help people feel grounded in unfamiliar circumstances.
It's about creating systems that allow a family to function while everything else is changing.
Over the years, I have realized that some of the most meaningful organizing work happens during these moments. Not because the spaces are perfect or because every box is unpacked, but because the right support at the right time can help someone feel at home sooner.
Home Is Something We Recreate
My client's move from Chile to Thailand was not the first time she had to rebuild a sense of home. And her move to Brazil likely won't be the last major transition her family experiences.
Life changes.
Careers evolve.
Families grow.
Opportunities arise.
Sometimes we choose change, and sometimes change chooses us. But through all of it, home remains one of the most important foundations we have.
I've come to realize that some of the most meaningful organizing work isn't about organizing the home. It's about helping people rebuild their sense of home because every move is more than a change of address...It's learning how to feel at home again.
